Chile's transport and telecommunications ministry (MTT) will join the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), transport undersecretary Gloria Hutt announced.

MTT will be the second Chilean institution to be part of the international organization, following state-owned firm Metro, which joined in 2001.

Hutt signed the incorporation documents at a ceremony on Friday (Sep 30) during the ninth assembly of UITP's Latin American division, held at the Diego Portales university's school of engineering in Santiago.

The decision to join UITP was part of Hutt's personal efforts to promote openness to new ideas at the ministry, Hutt told BNamericas on the sidelines of the event.

"To have the possibility of accessing information about what's going on in the public transport sector worldwide, in a very easy and direct way, opens your mind to make innovative proposals. That's what I want to do, to shake up the way work is done," Hutt said.

In the past few years, Chile has made important efforts to strengthen the role of mass transport in capital Santiago, Hutt said, stressing the important role of public transport in Chile.

Improvements for Santiago's transport system include renewing its fleet of buses and the planned extension of the subway network, involving two new lines worth US$2.76bn, to be completed in 2018.

UITP represents over 3,100 urban, local, regional and national mobility actors, including operating companies; authorities; the service and supply industry; and research institutes, academics and consultants from more than 90 countries.
